What the job involves

Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives. Old alarms stop working properly even with new batteries, because the sensors wear out.

Alarms get supplied, fitted and tested. Light fittings get swapped and installed. Bathroom and kitchen extractor fans get replaced. High and awkward bulbs get changed safely, including stairwells.

What it costs

• Replace a light fitting or smoke alarm, from £40

Labour is £30 per hour for anything not listed. This is a starting price. You get a firm price before any work starts.

Common questions

Do I need an electrician to change a light fitting?

Not for a like-for-like swap, which is what this covers. New circuits, moving switches and anything at the fuse board need a qualified electrician, and that work is referred on.

How often should smoke alarms be replaced?

The sensors wear out, so alarms need replacing after about ten years, not just new batteries. Check the date printed on the back of yours.

Do you fit carbon monoxide alarms?

Yes. They matter most through the heating season, when appliances are running hardest.

Can you change a bulb I cannot reach?

Yes. High ceilings and stairwells are the usual ones, and they are not worth risking a ladder for.
